Elements of Painting: Oils & Acrylics

TUESDAYS 5:30 - 8:30, September 16 through October 21

In this class, you'll learn the essential elements of painting: value, color, composition, shape, line, edge, and light while getting comfortable with your materials, while working in oil or acrylic. Whether you paint in a studio, at your kitchen table, or out in nature (Plein Air), these foundational tools are invaluable for any artist.

We'll begin with a limited color palette to help you focus on mixing and value:
• Ultramarine Blue
• Permanent Alizarin Crimson
• Cadmium Yellow Light
• Titanium White
(Feel free to bring any additional colors you may already have.)

Materials List:
• Canvas or wood panels (8x10 to 11x14")
• Palette and palette knife
• Palette paper
• Odorless mineral spirits (and solvent jar for oil painters)
• Vine charcoal
• Linseed oil (for oil painters)
• Water container (for acrylic painters)
• Brushes: sizes #2, #4, #6, #8
• And most importantly—a sense of humor!

This class is designed to be relaxed, informative, and hands-on. Whether you're just starting out or want to brush up on your basics, you'll walk away with a better understanding of how to build a painting from the ground up—with confidence and joy.
